- NGU er den Nasjonale fagmyndigheten for kunnskap om grunnvann, med ansvar for kartlegging av grunnvannsressurser, den Nasjonale grunnvannsdatabasen (GRANADA), anvendt forskning og metodeutvikling.
- Som vassdragsmyndighet etter Vannressurslovens §46 skal NGU samle inn brønndata og rapporter om grunnvannsundersøkelser, og formidle kunnskap om grunnvannet til brukere i offentlig og privat sektor (Grunnvann i Norge).
